Title: Nick's real life career
Post by: NickC on December 14, 2009, 10:16:54 PM UTC
Hello all,

Rudy's has a really nice topic where he posts stuff about his RL racingcareer and i don't think everybody is aware of what i do besides racing LFS so i thought "let's make one myself"

I started racing when i was 15. I took part in Bleekemolens racing school and when i was 16 i got my licence and did my first endurance races in a seat ibiza diesel.

And i did ALOT of drifting to train my car control. Even did some competition drifting later on.

After the endurance racing the team wanted me to take part in the biggest (small) dutch events. During al the major Dutch championships. I took part in the Seat Ibiza Cup

I was Vice champion in my first season. Well vice champion is just a nice word for being 2nd :P

Because i came in 2nd some people became interested and asked me to test Formula Ford. Everything went quite well and i signed with GEVA racing to race in the dutch formula ford.

Like i said the test went "quite" well ;)

I won the championship and became dutch and benelux champion. I also took part in the world final at brands hatch. I won all the heats and the semi final but came in 4th in the final (behind people i already beat in the semi's)

In between all this i raced in several 24hour races ( barcelona 3 times, Dubai 1 time )

That was dubai btw :P

After the formula fords i drove the Formula Renault for two years in the NEC championship. The first season was quite good, i came in 6th. After that season i made the wromg team choice, i should have gone to another team to learn different things but i stayed with the same team ( budget issues ) and came in 8th.

It's a tough sport sometimes ;)

This year i did my first year in the Megane trophy during the amazing World Series by Renault weekends. I got some good results in the races that i finished. But i only finished 5 out of 14 races :( . So the season was really bad. After the season i did some testing with another team and for next year all is looking great.

In between i did some guest races in the dutch gt4 in a ginetta G50. I inmediatly won and it was the first victory for that car. Think that was the best thing of 2009 for me. Because the Dutch Gt4 is quite high level for dutch standards.

2 hour stints in real life are so much easier then doing it in LFS !

In dubai 2 hours without any drink, that was quite shit!

Don't think it's even on Eurosport unlike Renault 3.5

Race 1: http://intranetwsr.alkamelsystems.com/Results_NoticeBoard/03_2010/02_SPA/MGT/9_MGT_DECISION4_SPA.jpg (http://intranetwsr.alkamelsystems.com/Results_NoticeBoard/03_2010/02_SPA/MGT/9_MGT_DECISION4_SPA.jpg) wat :|
Race 2 Nick took 2nd, live timing didn't have weather info but it was getting drier near the end, Nick and a few other made a stop and there was a late SC to make it a 2 lap dash to the line.

Hey guys,

Was quite a good weekend for me.

I completly owned everybody in the both Qualify's.

Race 1 was a big mess. A shame that stuff like that can happen at this level.

Race 2 i lost some time during pitstop and pitin and pitout.

In the end i was p2. Which is not so bad!

Looking forward to next race :)!

Superb Nick - you blew them away.  Looking forward to catching some race highlights on Youtube or otherwhere if they ever get online.  Judging by lap times, Q1 was dry, Q2 wet, race 2 wet?  So you were fastest in both wet and dry quallies - no excuses for the others :)  (You spoiled the clean sweep by not getting P1 and fastest race lap but I'm sure you'll fix that next race ;))

Ah, figured it was something like that.  Caught most of the 2nd half of the race on the live timing screen after Boothy posted, and noticed a guy screaming up behind you at 7+ seconds per lap.  I guess he was on fresh rubber and had been way way back until the safety car nearly won the race for him.

Nice stuff, I wondered though, are the races broadcasted somewhere though? Been searching for that but didn't find.

FTR I think Nick's rival at the champ, Pierre Thiriet is related(he's his son AFAIK although I'm not sure) to the guy who's sponsoring one of my father's friend in rally - Bertrand Pierrat is his name, he's doing some regional rallyes in his Toyota Corolla WRC and has been doing a couple of WRC rallyes in group N IIRC :)

I'll be at Donington just up the road for the BTCC (stupid WSR twats scheduling it on the same date as the most popular championship in Britain even though the BTCC schedule was out in October 2009  ) don't know how easy it would be to meet up with you lot for dinner or something as I'm getting the train down/flight back so no car...  :/

And yes it's free, don't know whether you have to pre-order or something though.

Ah bummer, it says you can't book the - free - tickets this close to the event ("this close"??) - maybe all booked already, shame :/

Post by: Pete on September 09, 2010, 09:10:26 AM UTC
Damn! I really wanna go to this! Nick - Can you get us some tickets!?!?! :D

FYI i found some tickets on ebay but don't see the point in paying for tickets which are free. It's kind of a skank!

Title: Re: Nick's real life career
Post by: Neil on September 09, 2010, 11:31:15 AM UTC
Ebaying tickets you got for free is pretty scummy. Maybe that's where a lot of them went?
I'd have thought that (a) the Ts & Cs of the free tickets would prohibit sale and (b) the organisers would be keen to take action to stamp it out.  (But it's a pain to do that of course with lots of mickey mouse ebay operations...)

Oh well!

PS: Good luck Nick! :)

Hey guys,

For sure i can arrange tickets, but normally its kinda difficult to drive up and down the entrance during the day.

Anyboy know a solution? Maybe someone can get by on friday or something?

For sure i can get the tickets + parking on thurday.

Post them me! I'll paypal you some £ as well (i'd rather give you some cash for them, than some skank on ebay) ;)

Title: Re: Nick's real life career
Post by: Neil on September 10, 2010, 05:24:39 PM UTC
Hmm, Nick do you mean you won't actually have tickets in your hands until the Thursday before the race? If so, maybe borderline to post them... I reckon I'm about an hour away from Silverstone but not sure I could get away from work during the day [edit I mean Friday that is].
I'm sure there must be a solution tho.  Hmm, are you staying in a local B&B or something? Maybe something could be left with them?

Title: Re: Nick's real life career
Post by: Turkey on September 10, 2010, 05:25:49 PM UTC
If it is certain that you can get the tickets, I would be very interested in coming. I will speak to the other founders too, as they might fancy a trip :)

Post by: Pete on September 10, 2010, 05:37:37 PM UTC
A few people from my BMW site are going down camping there but i don't know them too well to trust them with any tickets.

If we can't sort it out by Sunday i'll have to just make them ebayers a little richer i think. :/

Nick goes WTCC http://www.fiawtcc.com/qa-nicky-catsburg/ (http://www.fiawtcc.com/qa-nicky-catsburg/)

Quote
Nicky Catsburg will make his FIA World Touring Car Championship debut in ROSNEFT WTCC Race of Russia this weekend when he drives a third LADA Vesta TC1 alongside Rob Huff and Jaap van Lagen.

Welcome to the WTCC Nick. Can you believe you are here?
“No, it’s all been a bit of a surprise and it all came very quickly. But now I am here I’m super happy and I’m looking forward to seeing how it goes.”

What knowledge do you have of the Moscow Raceway?
“Nothing. This track is completely new to me. I did my track walk yesterday. I tried to do some simulator laps but it’s all pretty new. It looks pretty nice.”

But nice is not easy. Will it be a difficult track to learn?
“It looks pretty technical, especially some of the slower parts so it will be quite hard to learn the track.”

And you’ve also got to learn a car. How are you finding the LADA Vesta?
“I did a couple of laps at Magny-Cours two or three weeks ago and I must say it was a bit of a surprise because the fastest front-wheel-driven car I’ve driven so far is a Renault Clio and now this! So it’s a lot of power on the front wheels and it requires a very specific driving style. It took me a while to get up to speed but I’m sure with the help of Rob and Jaap I will hopefully get up to speed quickly and be amongst them.”

What is the target for this weekend?
“In the end it’s a very important race for LADA and ROSNEFT our sponsor. We hope to be in the front obviously. For myself personally I just hope to do a good job for the team and hope to be close to my team-mates and that’s my only expectation so far. I have no idea of where we are compared to the other cars.”

You were meant to be racing in Zolder this weekend weren’t you?
“Exactly. I was meant to be racing in Zolder in the Blancpain Sprint Series so I had to discuss this with my team Reiter Engineering where I am a contracted driver. But they said okay, this is a very nice opportunity for you to explore this whole new market and a world championship so he said let’s go and we will find a replacement.”

So no crazy commuting plans between the two tracks for you then?
“No, no that’s going to be hard!”

You are one of three Dutch drivers competing in WTCC Race of Moscow – there seems to be a lot of good drivers from your country racing right now…
“I think there are a lot of good drivers anyway. I think I got lucky with this deal with LADA. Obviously I know Jaap, another race driver who lives close to my house. We’re basically friends and that’s the reason why I’m here. Now we have three Dutch drivers [with Tom Coronel also] and that’s really cool.”

Cool!
I just tried the WTCC website. I don't follow this championship at all (probly isn't free to view in the UK - I've certainly never seen it) and the website really sucks but it seems like he has just scored more points for the team than any of their other drivers this year with a P4 in race 2. (Is there a third race in WTCC?)

I just knew that anyone faster than me had to be world-class ;)
Go Nicky!  :j
